Gary Jay Kaufman, Esq., Presented “Essentials of Successful Dispute Resolution: The Necessity for Personal Interaction” at the Second International Youth Forum on the Belt and Road Initiative in China
(January 23, 2019 – Los Angeles, CA) – Gary Jay Kaufman, founder of The Kaufman Law Group in Los Angeles, participated in the Second International Youth Forum on the Belt and Road Initiative, held on December 28, 2018, at the Academy of International Strategy and Law of Zhejiang University at its Zijingang Campus. The conference attendees hailed from 16 countries and included legal scholars, justices, university students, and authors. Renowned legal professor and scholar Wang Guiguo, who extended the invitation to Kaufman to speak at the Forum, is Dean of the Institute of International Strategy and Law, Dean of the International Institute of Belt and Road in Hong Kong, and Senior Professor of Arts at Zhejiang University. The Forum’s theme was “Youth Opportunities: Central and Eastern European Perspectives.”
Kaufman’s speech, entitled “Essentials of Successful Dispute Resolution: The Necessity for Personal Interaction,” discussed the art of negotiation, and the need to return to the basics of personal interaction. As a litigator with significant experience negotiating multi-million dollar matters, Kaufman expressed that face to face meetings or even telephone conversations are the most effective approach to dispute resolution, far better than relying upon email and text exchanges. “Emails and text messages may be faster, but both have the potential to dilute the clarity and understanding necessary for an effective resolution to any dispute. Important meanings and subtle messages can be lost in translation when relying too heavily on technology,” Kaufman said. “The old-fashioned face to face meeting is still the very best method of negotiation,” he added. In his presentation, he suggested paying closer attention to the role that diversity plays within dispute resolution, and to use communication to bridge the gap between different backgrounds.
